PDF issue using Mac Firefox or Safari in Blackboard

Uh oh! Are you or your students receiving a “Missing Plug-in” message while attempting to view PDFs using Blackboard?

Never fear, the solution is here. Safari and Firefox on the Mac do not come with a PDF reader built in, so you will have to download one. The iTeam has found the best solution to be Schubert|it PDF Browser Plugin. It is free to education users. It will allow you to view complete PDFs in Blackboard regardless of whether the PDF is set to open in a new window.

Please clear your browser’s cache and restart your browser after installing the plug-in.

Firefox: Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage > Clear Now
Safari: Safari menu > Empty Cache

You can also use Google Chrome, which has a built-in PDF viewer and opens PDF files without issue.

Faculty: As a workaround, you can create an Item instead of a File, and attach the PDF to the Item. OR, you can set the File to Open in New Window.

Please contact iteam AT sandiego DOT edu or call x7400 if you continue to have issues opening PDFs.
