The iTeam often receives a variation of the question, “What filetypes can I or a student submit to a Blackboard [Assignment, SafeAssign, etc.]?” So, I’ve compiled the master list here:

Item/File

Blackboard provides an extensive list. Click on the link above to view it. Here are the most commonly uploaded filetypes:

  • DOC (MS Word)
  • HTML
  • JPG, JPEG
  • MP3
  • PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format)
  • PNG
  • PPT, PPS, PPTX
  • QT
  • RTF (Rich Text Format)
  • TXT (Plain Text)
  • WPD
  • XLS, XLSX
  • ZIP

Assignment

Any of the above filetypes that can be attached to an Item can be submitted as an Assignment. However, Blackboard will convert the following to a format that is viewable inside the web browser and gradable using Crocodoc, Blackboard’s Inline Grading tool:

  • DOC, DOCX
  • PPT, PPTX
  • XLS, XLSX
  • PDF

SafeAssign

SafeAssign supports file types that are convertible to plain text, including:

  • DOC, DOCX
  • PPT, PPTX
  • HTML, HTM
  • ODT (Open Office Document)
  • PDF
  • RTF
  • TXT

Additionally, SafeAssign supports the submission of .zip files containing any of the above filetypes. SA submissions must not exceed 10MB; if submitted as a .zip file the .zip must not be greater than 10MB.

TurnItIn

  • DOC, DOCX
  • PPT, PPTX, PPS
  • WPD (Word Perfect)
  • HTML, HTM
  • HWP (Hangul)
  • PDF
  • PS (Adobe PostScript)
  • RTF (Rich text format)
  • TXT (Plain text)

Files submitted to Turnitin may not exceed 20MB; text only files may not exceed 2MB.
